VALDOSTA — Valdosta-Lowndes County residents who have made serving their community a New Year’s resolution have until Wednesday, Jan. 28, to apply for eight opportunities to serve on one of the city’s boards, commissions, authorities, and advisory committees (BCAAC).

The Valdosta City Council will vote on the new appointments at their Feb. 8 City Council meeting to fill the following eight vacancies:

· Valdosta Historic Preservation Commission — 3

· Hospital Authority of Valdosta & Lowndes County — 1 *

· MPO Citizens Advisory Committee — 1

· Valdosta-Lowndes County Housing Board of Adjustments and Appeals — 2

· Public Art Advisory Committee (Community at Large) — 1
(* The Hospital Authority of Valdosta & Lowndes County provides the City Council with the nominations to fill their vacancies. City Council will appoint one of the three nominations received to fill the Hospital Authority vacancy listed above at the Feb. 8 meeting.)

Information about city BCAACs, their mission and purpose, and meeting times may be found on the city’s web site.

“These are wonderful opportunities for people to give back to their community,” said Valdosta Mayor John Gayle. “BCAACs are designed to give citizens a voice in their local government and provide a means of influencing decisions that shape the quality of life for the residents in our community. Participation on a BCAAC is one of the most effective steps a citizen can take in becoming an active voice in their government.”

The City of Valdosta advertises for BCAAC appointments on a quarterly basis, and appointments are made in February, May, August, and November or as vacancies occur. The city’s appointment process ensures that citizens have the knowledge of these opportunities to serve.

Applicants must review the Membership Requirements and Code of Ethics Booklet, complete a General Board Application, and sign a Code of Ethics form. These documents are available for download at, by clicking the “Boards & Commissions” tab from the “Administration” dropdown menu.
