Hahira Middle School TSA Partners With City Business To Improve Park

| January 27, 2015

HAHIRA — While most students were enjoying sleeping late and playing with their presents after Christmas, Hahira Middle School Technology Student Association (TSA) members were waking up early and giving back to their community. Each year, HMS TSA finds a community need to meet for their Construction Challenge Project. After meeting with Hahira local officials, Jonathan Sumner and Donnie Warren, TSA members Conner Chancy, Brayden Whidden, and Maddox Whidden decided to spruce up one of the city parks with the addition of a picnic table.

To help fund the project the students contacted local businesses and were able to secure a one hundred dollar donation. Soon after the donation was secured, the kids went to work. After researching for table plans and purchasing materials, the team met at HMS early one morning during the holiday break to construct the table. While constructing the table, the students learned many valuable lessons including the proper use of tools like a tape measure, speed square, miter saw and hand drill. However, the most important lesson of all was the value of giving back to your local community.
The city has plans to add a barbeque grill next to the table at Smith Park on Coleman Road and encourages community members to go out and enjoy the new additions to the park. During the month of March, HMS TSA will be showcasing their project at the Georgia TSA State Conference in Athens GA.
