COFFEE COUNTY — A tragic accident Friday on a Coffee County highway took the lives of 3 family members.

Georgia State Patrol reported the accident occurred about 8:30 Friday morning at the intersection of Georgia Highways 268 and 206.

Roy Merritt, his wife Mary and sister-in-law Annie Lou Pittman were killed when the vehicle they were traveling in did not yield the right of way at the intersection and crashed into a commercial truck.

All 3 of the family members were taken to the hospital.  They were all later pronounced dead.

The driver of the truck, Lance Seymour, made evasive actions to avoid the accident but was unable to do so.  He struck the Cadillac DeVille the Merritt’s were driving on the right side.  Seymour did avoid injuries.

Reports from the Georgia State Patrol and Coffee County Sheriff’s Office made to WALB stated the sun at that time of the morning may have prevented Merritt from seeing the oncoming truck.

No charges will be filed as a result of the accident.
