Nearly 1 Million Illegal Immigrants Live in Florida

| November 18, 2014

MIAMI  — A report from the Pew Research Center shows Florida is home to an estimated 925,000 illegal immigrants.  Most have not come from foreign countries, but from the West and Southwest United States.

The total number of immigrants living in the United States illegally hasn’t changed much since 2009, but where they live has, and it’s more often Florida.

The report, released Tuesday, shows Florida saw the biggest increase in residents without legal immigration status.  Between 2009 and 2012, some 55,000 new immigrants in the country illegally came to the Florida for jobs in agriculture, construction, and hospitality.

Other states also saw sharp rises, including Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Meanwhile, the states of Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico saw the biggest declines.
