| October 21, 2014

Lowndes-County-Sheriff's-Patrol-Car-SideLAKE PARK — Residents of Lake Park reported the burglary of their homes.  There seemed to be pattern.  Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputies believe they have a suspect in custody.

On October 11, 2014 the residents at 5132 Lauren Lane, Lake Park reported the burglary of their home in which certain items were taken including debit cards and the victim’s identification cards among other items. During the same time period, a number of reports were filed by residents in the Lake Park area alleging that persons had entered their vehicles and taken items such as debit/credit cards and in one instance a firearm.

During the investigation of these events, investigators obtained video imagery of a person attempting to use one of the debit cards and subsequently identified the person as Robert Atkins.

Investigators located Atkins and eventually connected him with the burglary and multiple offenses of entering auto. In addition, it was learned that Robert Atkins brother, Michael Nelson had possessed the stolen handgun, on which the serial number had been altered.

Robert Atkins and Michael Nelson have been arrested and remain in the Lowndes County Jail.

Sheriff Prine is again encouraging anyone with information on this incident or other suspicious activities to contact the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office at {229} 671-2950; anonymous tips can be provided at {229} 671-2985 or on line at
