rp_primary_Edwards_1VALDOSTA — An exciting afternoon at The VSU Soccer Complex ended favorably for the Valdosta State soccer team, as the Blazers used two goals from Abbi Edwards to pick up a 2-1 Gulf South Conference victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Senior Day in Valdosta.

The win boosted the Blazers’ overall record to 8-5-1 and lifted the squad to an impressive 8-1-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Lady Chargers fell to 5-10 overall and 4-7 in GSC play.

Prior to the contest, the 12 seniors of the 2014 squad were recognized with an on-field ceremony, and Edwards proceeded to make the most of the day with a performance that the senior described as one of her best ever.

“When I scored the second goal and my teammates ran up to me, all I could say was ‘This is the best day of my life!’,” said Edwards during her postgame description of how she felt during the match. “Everybody’s here, and it was just the perfect way to end a day like this. I will always be able to look back and say that this was probably the best game of my life.”

Edwards first goal came on a breakaway opportunity that she took full advantage of when she beat UAH keeper Larae Breaux with a nifty shot for the first goal of the day. The score came in the 24th minute of the first half and marked Edwards’ first goal of the 2014 season.

The second goal for the senior, which proved to be the game-winner, came early in the second period thanks to a well-placed cross from fellow senior Margaret Stauffer. Edwards received the pass and shot from the right side of the 18-yard box into the far side netting to put the Blazers in front 2-0. The assist was Stauffer’s third of the year, and the score represented the fifth career goal for Edwards.

The Valdosta State defensive unit held the Lady Chargers to just five shots and one goal, which UAH scored in the closing minutes of the match. Alexcia Alexander slipped a shot into the corner of the net to finish off a one on one chance in the 81st minute for her tenth goal of the season. In contrast, the Blazers remained on the attack consistently throughout the day with 23 shots and 16 shots on goal.

The Blazers return to action for the final home game of the 2014 season with a 6:00 p.m. contest against Newberry on Tuesday, October 28 at The VSU Soccer Complex.
