News Update Logo 2Sidewalk Repairs on Gornto Road in Valdosta

The City of Valdosta Engineering Department will begin sidewalk repairs on Gornto Road between Springhill Drive and Andover Drive on Tuesday, Sept. 2, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The work is expected to take five weeks to complete, weather permitting. Traffic lanes on Gornto Road will be shifted as necessary to accommodate a safe work zone. As always, motorists should use extreme caution and pay close attention to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic while driving in these areas. Valdosta Fire Department Accepting Applications

The Valdosta Fire Department will be accepting applications for employment at the Career Expo Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Valdosta Fire Department, Station No. 1, located at 106 S. Oak Street.  To become a member of the VFD, an applicant must have a high school diploma and must successfully pass a cognitive/academic skills and physical agility test, a background check, reference checks, a physical and a drug test. The department has a comprehensive 12-week fire training program for those selected; therefore, prior experience is not required. Departments from across the state have also are expected as well as departments re[representatives from the Georgia Fire Academy, Valdosta State University, Wiregrass Technical College and Georgia Military College. Tax Increase Hearings Scheduled in Moultrie

Tuesday the city of Moultrie will begin public hearings on the proposal to increase taxes for 2015. The first hearing takes place in council chambers on the second floor of the Municipal Building 21 First Avenue N. E. at 11 a. m. and 6 p. m.. The second hearing will be held on the 16th at corresponding times. On August 5th members of the city council voted to increase the millage rate to 12.818 mills; a 1.85 mill increase resulting in a property tax increase of $74 on property valued at $100,000.

Tift County Report Arrests Related to Killing

Tifton and Tift County law enforcement agencies report the arrests of three suspects in connection with the killing of William Bernard Thomas. Taken into custody were 21 year old DeAnthony Davenport, Austin McIntyre age 19 and 21 year old Derrick Britt. 19 year old William Thomas was shot as he stood in his yard on August 22nd.
