Youth Football and Cheerleading Registration Extended

| June 25, 2014

Football-and-FieldVALDOSTA, GA – Excited future Vikings and Wildcats showed their skills at VLPRA’s Youth Football Evaluation Day Saturday at Martin Stadium and Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The NFL-style combine was the first taste of football season for players in the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks & Recreation Authority’s Youth Football & Cheerleading Program.

Teams are divided by school district and the evaluation day was, too. Members of Lowndes High’s coaching staff, including Head Football Coach Randy McPherson, were at Martin Stadium cheering on the young talent. Meanwhile, current Valdosta High School Wildcats players ran participants through drills at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The young athletes each ran the 40-yard dash, did cone drills, and got an evaluation day t-shirt.

The league is for kindergartners through 5th graders, but is divided by middle school district the children are zoned to attend. For instance, a child who will eventually go to Pine Grove Middle School will play for the Pine Grove District, while a child who is zoned for Valdosta Middle School will play for the Valdosta Middle District. There will also be Valwood teams and the league is open to children who attend other private schools in Valdosta and Lowndes County as well as home-schoolers. Teams will practice in their communities and play games at the high school stadiums, as well as at VLPRA parks such as North Lowndes, South Lowndes, Scott Park and Freedom Park.

VLPRA is extending registration, so there is still time to sign up. There are three age brackets to choose from: kindergartners and 1st graders will play flag football, 2nd and 3rd graders are paired up for tackle football, and 4th and 5th graders will play tackle ball together. Cheerleading follows the same brackets.

Uniforms, including pads and helmets, are included in the registration fees, which are only $50 for tackle leagues and $35 for flag leagues and cheerleading. Parents can register their children online at or in person at the Administration Building at 1901 North Forrest Street in Valdosta.
