valdosta-city-schools-logoVALDOSTA, GA – Elementary and middle school students in Valdosta City Schools showed great improvement in performance on the Criterion Reference Competency Tests (CRCT) preliminary results received in Valdosta City Schools last week.

While academic gains were noted across all content areas, grade specific areas in need of focus continue to be science, social studies and increasing the number of students who exceed in all grades and content areas.

Some of the academic gains we are most pleased with include 7th grade reading scores where they saw over a 10-point gain, with a third of the students exceeding in this content area. Eighth grade social studies had an 11-point gain with 80% of all students passing the state assessment. Additionally, in eighth grade science they saw a nine-point gain compared to those taking the CRCT in 2013.

For the district, in grades 3rd through 8th, 94% of students passed the CRCT in reading and over a third of them exceeded on the CRCT. In English/Language Arts, 91% of students passed the CRCT and over 28% of the students in 3rd through 8th grades exceeded on the CRCT. State law requires that students in grades 3rd, 5th and 8th meet or exceed expectations in reading to be promoted. It is also a requirement that 5th and 8th grade students meet or exceed expectations in the area of mathematics.

“We are very pleased with these gains, they are sure to have a positive impact on next year’s 2014 CCRPI data to be released in December,” said Superintendent, E. Martin Roesch.

Graphs showing trend data over the past five years and comparison CRCT data to the previous school year are available on the Valdosta City Schools website. Please visit www.gocats.org for this information and as always, contact your student’s school for individual student and school data.
