You’re a 10. And so is it.

| April 28, 2014

EDITORIAL – What is it exactly? It’s your hair, and these are the products which will get you that fabulous compliment; “You’re hair looks UH-MAAA-ZINGGG.” To which, of course, you’ll naturally reply, “Oh, you think so?” as though you weren’t already aware of the fact that your hair is now a perfectly handcrafted masterpiece of luciousness.

About six months ago, I happened upon some brilliant new styling products which turned my frayed, disgusting, straw-like split ends into something truly worth noting. And, obviously, writing about.

“It’s A 10” (the inspiration for the title) has been truly amazing for my hair which is not dyed, long, thick, brown, and normally frizzy. I was looking for something which would not only control my frizz, but also detangle, as well as provide a softness that I just couldn’t seem to get from any Moroccan oil I tried. And this, obviously, does all of those things plus seven others!

  1. Repairs dry, damaged hairIt's-a-10
  2. Adds shine
  3. Detangles
  4. Controls frizz
  5. Seals and protects hair color
  6. Prevents split ends
  7. Stops hair breakage
  8. Creates silkiness
  9. Enhances natural body
  10. Flat iron spray and thermal protector

Although the bottle is only four fluid ounces, I used it generously about 3 times a week (per the bottle’s directions) and it lasted me for about three and a half months. Therefore, although the price ($18 at Ulta) may seem steep for a bottle so tiny, it should be rationalized not only against the mega-power of the formula, but also against the lasting power of the bottle.

NuanceNext up is a close rival to the above product. Nuance Salma Hayek Flax Seed Age Therapy Serum is a rich, more liquid treatment which promises to do many of the same things as “It’s A 10” but with more natural resources. Ingredients will include things such as soy protein, faba seed, and pea extracts. Whatever the ingredients, these two are pretty much interchangeable, but should definitely not be used together. My hair is very thick, and when used together, these two will combine to form a greasy, oily mess. Not hot. However, the Nuance Salma Hayek Flax Seed Age Therapy Serum is a bit cheaper with the two ounce bottle being only $12.99, and with the added bonus of being available at CVS, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get it even cheaper. ExtraBucks, anyone?

Next, my heat protectant from Redken has truly been a hair-saver. For some reason, every heat protectant I tried prior to this one made my hair Redkensmell like fried eggs after I styled it. It was disgusting. Something had to be done. Finally, after much trial and error, I found Redken Iron Shape Eleven Finishing Thermal Spray. Although the description claims that it will “hold” your hair style, it doesn’t make your hair crispy. Touchably soft curls or gorgeous, tv commercial straight strands will make you an avid buyer of this amazing heat protectant. I spray it on dry hair before styling and have freely used it with both of the above products with only fantastic results. Although it locks in the sleekness that “Its a 10” or “Nuance Salma Hayek Flax Seed Age Therapy Serum” provides, it doesn’t put any more oil in the hair with the added advantage of my hair smelling like flowers instead of burned breakfast.

Bumble-and-Bumble-GroomingFinally, Bumble and Bumble’s Grooming Creme “is the dream creme for those who love to look polished, elegant, and smooth but hate to work at it.” Although I haven’t exactly determined what it is Bumble and Bumble’s Grooming Creme does for each hair type (mostly because it’s not on the bottle), I do know that it does make my normally frizzy, chunky hair, look irresistibly, effortlessly wavy, and breezy. On a friend of mine’s hair which is naturally straight and fine, it creates an impossibly gorgeous shine and silkiness rivaling any other product I’ve ever seen. Therefore, I am forced to believe this dream creme only succeeds in defining your hair’s natural beauty, as well as highlighting it.
