One Arrested After West Street Shooting

Valdosta-Police-Car-SideVALDOSTA, GA – Valdosta Police Department have arrested one man after an altercation, that turned into a shooting, on West Street.

On April 1, at approximately 7:34 pm, the Valdosta Police Department responded to the 500 block of West Street in reference to the report of someone being shot.

Officers arrived and found the victim, Samuel Sawyer, with a single gunshot wound to the head. Sawyer was transported by EMS to the SGMC ER.

Officers located Hubert Heflin, 48 years of age, who indicated that he had shot Sawyer. Officers detained Heflin and secured the area while detectives from the Valdosta Police Department and a Crime Scene Technician from the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory responded to investigate.

According to witnesses in the area, there was an ongoing dispute throughout the day between Heflin and Sawyer. After the initial investigation was completed, Helfin was taken to the Lowndes County Jail and will be charged with Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Sawyer is expected to recover from his injuries.
