VSU-Mens-Tennis-3 MONTGOMERY, AL – The Valdosta State men’s tennis team’s bid for the 2014 Gulf South Conference Title came up short after the team was defeated 5-2 by West Alabama in the semifinal round at Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. on Saturday.

Despite a strong showing in singles action, the Blazers (12-7) were unable to overcome the early 3-0 deficit that they faced at the conclusion of doubles action on the day.

Niklas Herbring and Francisco Yim Kim suffered defeat to Adam Drysdale and Anton Ivanov with a 9-8 (7-2) loss in an incredibly close set at No. 1 doubles, before Nestor Vargas and Kike Ruiz slid past Sebastian Jasyk and Tammo Haake, 8-6, at No. 2.

The Blazers fell further into a hole after Gereon Heitmann and Mario Navarro Bayo dropped an 8-3 contest to Simon Bardelli and Manuel Grossman at No. 3.

Valdosta State staged a potential comeback in singles play, and led in four of six singles matches, but Navarro Bayo just missed a win at No. 2, as he fell 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) to Ivanov, and Yim Kim fell 6-1, 6-2 to Vargas at No. 1.

The two points for the Blazers came with wins for Heitmann at No. 3 singles over Drysdale (7-5, 6-1), and a victory for Joachim Schemm at No. 4 over Bardelli (6-3, 6-1).

With the loss, the Blazers were eliminated from the single elimination tournament, and the Tigers moved on to face West Florida in the championship match.

The Blazers entered the GSC Tournament ranked at No. 5 in the NCAA South Regional Rankings, and must wait for the updated rankings to find out what lies ahead for VSU men’s tennis in 2014. Stay tuned to www.vstateblazers.com for updates as they become available in the days to come.
