VSU-Baseball-6 VALDOSTA, GA -Valdosta State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Blazers defeated Georgia Regents 5-3 in non-conference baseball action at Lake Olmstead Stadium Wednesday.

Valdosta State (18-9) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning without the benefit of a hit. With one out in the frame, Mike Reed walked and stole second. A pair of wild pitches followed to allow Reed to come home for a 1-0 VSU lead.

The Blazers pushed their lead to 2-0 in the third inning when Dominique Smedley opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Clint Carr sacrifice bunt. Matthew Fearsfollowed with a single to allow Smedley to score the game’s second run.

VSU also scored a run in the fourth inning when Kevin Cruz singled and came home on a Hunter Thompson double, only to have Georgia Regents (12-19) respond with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Ryan Khan RBI single that cut the Valdosta State lead to 3-1.

The Jaguars added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Reed added an RBI single that scored Thompson in the seventh to once again give VSU a two-run lead.

The Blazers added their fifth and final run, again without the benefit of a hit, in the ninth inning as Smedley walked to open the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch before Carr laid down his second sacrifice bunt of the contest. A Fears ground out drove him home for a 5-2 Valdosta State edge.

Four straight walks with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave GRU its final run, but Colby Wisdom came on to induce a ground out from Hunter Boose to end the threat for his first save of the season.

Matt Moses pitched 4.1 innings out of the bullpen and allowed just two hits and one run to improve to 1-1 on the season. Reed and Thompson were each 2-for-3 with a run scored and one driven in to lead the Blazers offensively while Cruz was 2-for-4 on the night.

Valdosta State returns to action Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when it travels to Jackson, Tenn. to take on Union in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader. The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a single game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
