VSU Baseball to Set Host Christian Brothers

VALDOSTA, GA – Valdosta State returns home to Billy Grant Field for the first time in more than two weeks as the Blazers host Christian Brothers in Gulf South Conference baseball action this weekend.

The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday followed by a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Sunday’s game will also feature “Bark in the Park” at Billy Grant Field and will be Church Bulletin Day, with all fans presenting a church bulletin gaining free admission to the game.

After winning each of its first 10 games, Valdosta State has dropped seven of its last 12 games and now owns a 15-7 record on the season. The Blazers are currently fourth in the Gulf South Conference standings with an 8-5 record. Meanwhille, Chrisitan Brothers has opened the year 5-18, including 0-12 in GSC play.

Valdosta State leads the Gulf South Conference in batting average at .312 and has scored 155 runs on the year, an average of 7.0 per game. The Blazers are third in the conference with nine home runs, including six from Bryant Hayman, who is tied for the conference lead. Hayman also leads the GSC in runs batted in with 31 on the season while Matthew Fears is first in the league in hits with 34 and Mike Reed has the conference’s top batting average at .397 while also leading the Gulf South Conference in runs scored with 27.

On the mound, Valdosta State has a 3.78 team earned run average, which ranks fifth in the conference. The squad has 155 strikeouts on the season, the second-most among all teams, and is holding opponents to a .258 batting average. Josh Mann leads the group as he is tied for first in the Gulf South Conferenc with six victories on the season, against no losses, and is sixth in the conference with a 1.40 earned run average.

Christian Brothers is currently eighth in the GSC with a .224 batting average and has scored 65 runs on the season, an average of 2.8 per game. Mac Cooley, who also serves as one of the Bucs’ starting pitchers, leads the team offensively with a .286 battinga verage and has driven in six runs. Meanwhile, Charles Kelly is second on the team in batting average at .258 and has a team high nine RBI while also standing first in runs scored with 12.

The Bucs own a 4.04 team ERA and has struck out 127 batters as a squad. CBU has allowed teams a .291 batting average and gives up more than five runs per game. Despite a 0-2 record in four starts, Cooley also leads Christian Brothers on the mound as he has allowed only seven earned runs in the 20.0 innings, an ERA of 3.15
