JACKSON, TN – Valdosta State rolled to a 10-0 eight inning victory in the first game before faling 6-2 in the second game as the Blazers split a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader at Fesmire Field Sunday.

Dom DeMasi dominated the Bulldogs in the first game as he recorded his second straight complete game. The junior allowed only four hits in the contest and walked two more batters while tying a career-high with nine strikeouts. After allowing a single in both the first and second innings, DeMasi did not give up another hit until the leadoff batter in the seventh inning while also giving up a hit in the eighth. The effort upped his record to 5-2 on the season.

Valdosta State (20-10, 12-7) got the only run it needed in the top of the first inning as Matthew Fears opened the game with a single and scored from first two batters later when Bryant Hyman collected one of his three doubles in the contest.

The Blazers added two more runs in the third inning as Fears doubled home Hunter Thompson and Clint Carr scored on a passed ball before scoring a fourth run in the fifth inning when Hayman doubled and scored two batters later on a Kevin Cruz double.

After Mike Reed opened the seventh with a base on balls, three of the next four VSU batters reached base, including RBI hits by Jimmy Dowdell, Cruz and Thompson while Dominique Smedley plated Cruz with a suicide squeeze but to push the Valdosta State lead to 8-0 while the Blazers added their final two runs in the eighth, including one on an RBI single by Cruz.

After collecting 14 hits in the first game, VSU managed just five in the second game, including only one in the first four innings, during which it fell behind 6-0.

Union (10-21, 4-12) scored three runs in both the first and second innings of the game as it took advantage of errors in each frame. In the first, with one on and no outs, Michael Flores reached on an error before a pair of walks drove in a run. After a double play on a pop up, Wacey Russell doubled to score both Flores and Zach Wylie to put UU in front 3-0.

In the second, an error with one on and no outs again put two Bulldogs on base. A walk two batters later loaded the bases before Wylie doubled to plate two. Russell added a sacrifice fly two batters later to post the Bulldogs to a 6-0 lead.

The Blazers took advantage of an error to score an unearned run in the fifth inning and added a second in the sixth inning while Fears added an RBI single in the sixth. VSU got the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth inning, only to have a Hayman ground out end the threat.

Colby Wisdom started for Valdosta State and allowed three hits and five runs, two earned, in just over an inning of play to fall to 2-1.

Fears was 5-for-9 with two runs scored and two driven in on the day to lead Valdosta State offensively while Cruz was 4-for-8 with three driven in.

Valdosta State returns to action and to Billy Grant Field Wednesday when it hosts Flagler at 5:00 p.m.
