| March 3, 2014

Tim-Golden-RetireVALDOSTA, GA –  After 34 years in public service Senator Tim Golden has announced he will not be running for re-election for the Georgia State Senate, District 8. Sen. Golden says he has decided to devote more time to his business career and family.

Sen. Golden has served 10 years as an aide to former Congressman Charles Hatcher, 8 years as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives and the past 16 years in the State Senate. During this time, he has had his hand in a variety of legislation that has effected the District and the State of Gerogia. Some of these include:

  • Establishing Georgia’s sales tax holiday period for back-to-school purchases to help families and retail businesses in the state.
  • Strengthening the “Drugs Don’t Work” program to help Georgia businesses save money by maintaining a drug-free work environment for their employees.
  • Establishing the tax check-off system for contributions to the Georgia National Guard Family Foundation to support the families of troops.
  • Leading the effort to enhance Valdosta State University’s status as a world-class higher education institution, highlighted by the achievement of university status in 1993 and addition of the Health Sciences building to be dedicated in April, and securing budget appropriations to help grow VSU and the technical colleges in the district.
  • Championing healthcare initiatives for rural Georgia, including tax credits for physicians who choose to practice in rural counties.
  • Providing tax relief on numerous occasions for Georgia companies to spur economic development and more job opportunities in the state.
  • And, just last week, receiving approval in the Senate and sending to the House legislation to ensure that young children who are autism patients receive the treatment they need.

Golden was listed among the “100 Most Influential Georgians”  this year by Georgia Trend magazine for the third time in the past six years.
