Blazers Errors Lead to 7-4 Loss to Albany State

Baseball-VSUALBANY, GA – Five errors by Valdosta State led to six Albany State runs as the Golden Rams defeated the Blazers 7-4 in non-conference baseball action at ASU Baseball Stadium Tuesday.

Each of the first six ASU runs were unearned as the Blazers committed four errors in the first four innings.

Valdosta State (17-9) jumped out to an early lead as it scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Hunter Thompson walked with one out in the frame before moving to second on a passed ball. Jimmy Dowdell also drew a walk and moved to third when Matthew Fears singled to score Thompson. Dowdell and Fears executed a double steal to allow Dowdell to score to put VSU in front 2-0.

Albany State (19-14) took the lead in the bottom of the third inning, during which the Blazers committed three errors. Sable Gilliard walked to open the inning before Hector Carrasquillo reached on an one-out error by Stewart Knight at second base. A walk to Ryan Latner loaded the bases before Gilliard scored on a wild pitch. A fielder’s choice followed, but on consecutive ground balls Valdosta State committed errors to allow two more runs to come home for a 3-2 ASU lead.

The Blazers briefly evened the game as they scored a run in the top of the fourth inning before the Golden Rams added three more unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs in the frame and a runner on base, Carrasquillo again reached via an error before another walk loaded the bases. Reise McDaniel followed with a double that cleared the bases to put Albany State in front 6-3.

Kevin Cruz sacrifice fly gave Valdosta State a run back in the top of the fifth and the Blazers loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, but were unable to push another run across. VSU also got two runners on in the sixth and ninth innings without scoring while Albany State added its final run in the seventh.

Ethan Bornstein fell to 2-2 on the season despite not giving up a hit and allowing three unearned runs in 2.2 innings. Zakk White also allowed three unearned runs in 3.1 innings.

Fears was 3-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in to lead VSU offensively.

The Blazers return to action Wednesdy evening at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Georgia Regents in Augusta.
