Lowndes County Sheriff's Patrol Car LAKE PARK, GA – The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating an apparent suicide at a Welcome Center off of Interstate 75.

According to the Valdosta Daily Times, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:00 p.m. to a report that a man had shot himself in the parking lot of the Lake Park welcome center off of I-75.

A red Corvette, reportedly with a Tennessee tag, had been parked under the trees on the northern part of the parking lot since 10 a.m. A sheriff’s deputy then noticed the car was parked with the engine running, said Sheriff Chris Prine.

Prine said the incident appeared to be a suicide, and a handgun was found in the vehicle.

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office then notified the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigation at Moody Air Force Base. Due to belongings found in the Corvette, police believed the man may have been in the military.

Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson is withholding the man’s identity until the family is notified.
