NMS Essay WinnersVALDOSTA, GA – Earlier in the school year, the Valdosta Elks Lodge held a Drug Awareness Essay and Poster Contest for students from 3rd through 8th grade in the Valdosta City and Lowndes County School Systems.

The theme for this year’s contest was “Down with drugs. Up with awareness.”  Entries from the two school systems were combined and there was one award given for each grade level.  Newbern would like to congratulate Jasmine Scott, Flora Maxwell, and Jamesha Watson for being essay contest winners.  The students were each awarded $50.00 checks, gift certificates from Chick fil A, and other prizes from the Valdosta Elks Lodge #728.

Jesse Boyd visited Newbern to congratulate the students and present their prizes.  He is pictured with the winners and Dr. Dan Altman, principal of Newbern Middle School.    The winning essays will be submitted for district, state, and national contests.
