Sick Days No Longer Mandated Thanks To FL Law

| June 18, 2013

FL state capitolGovernor Rick Scott yesterday signed into law a bill that blocks local governments from requiring employers to offer paid sick time.

Florida Retail Federations General Counsel Samantha Padgett says┬áthe law “creates consistency, predictability and conformity of regulation throughout the state. Before the bill was signed into law, two neighboring counties may have had different sick-time laws. Now, when you cross into a new county, the laws will be the same.”

Detractors of the law, however, say the law is taking “away their right to make those decisions for themselves at the local level.” A recent poll showed nearly 80 percent of Floridians supported employers providing sick days or sick time benefits.
